Candidate Statement

I am running to pass CalCare (Medicare For All), which will provide high quality health care for EVERYONE at a lower cost to the State! One of the critical issues facing all Californians is access to affordable and first-rate health care.

In spite of having a supermajority, Democrats in the State legislature have refused to allow a vote on the proposed bill for the last 3 years! Last year, the incumbent as head of the appropriations committee killed the proposed CalCare bill in that committee. This year in March, the Dems blocked our CalCare bill from going to committee, so CalCare is dead for this year. This is in spite of the fact that 86% of Californians want CalCare!

By electing me to the State Assembly, I’ll speak out everyday because the time to pass CalCare is now.

As a member of the Green Party, I do not accept any corporate or PAC donations. The incumbent does accept corporate and PAC money, the same sources which lobby to stall or kill legislation like CalCare.

I was a member of the Oakland Education Association, the teachers union, and served as an Executive Board Member, Treasurer, Secretary, and Delegate to the State Council. In order to have healthier and safer schools in Oakland, l led an effort joined by teachers and parents to persuade the School Board to adopt an Integrated Pest Management Plan, thus banning the use of pesticides on all Oakland Unified School District properties.

Another part of my platform is Social Housing: I will sponsor a bill to end homelessness by establishing a State bank, which will buy vacant properties around the state and place unhoused people in those houses and apartments. We don’t have a shortage of housing: there are 1.4 million vacant housing units in California and 200,000 unhoused people.
